JFS responds to SNAP funding disruption from recent federal shutdown

JFS is closely monitoring the impact of the recent federal government shutdown and federal budget cuts that are disrupting access to essential food and social services across Missouri.

During the shutdown, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced that Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits would not be issued for November. Even though the government shutdown is over, the disruption to the SNAP program put vulnerable families under greater strain.

“These developments are deeply concerning,” said Miriam Seidenfeld, CEO of Jewish Family Services. “Families who already struggle to put food on the table may soon face an even greater hardship. At JFS, we are preparing for what we know will be a growing need in the weeks and months ahead.”

Following recent federal budget cuts, the Harvey Kornblum Jewish Food Pantry, operated by JFS, has already seen an increase in visitors, including furloughed federal workers and referrals from other pantries that do not have enough food to distribute, and anticipates even greater demand with the disruption to SNAP benefits.

Thanks to proactive planning and strong community partnerships, the food pantry’s supply is currently sufficient. However, JFS leaders caution that disruption to SNAP benefits or further reduction in USDA food distributions will place increasing strain on local food pantries across the region.

“Because of our dedicated volunteers and the generosity of the community, JFS is able to meet immediate needs,” said Seidenfeld. “But the safety net that so many Missourians depend on is being tested, and we must be ready to respond.”

JFS encourages community members to stay informed, stay engaged, and continue supporting efforts to provide food, care, and dignity to all who need it.
