At JFS, we believe that small moments can lead to meaningful connections — and the work of our Older Adult Services team through NORC (Naturally Occurring Retirement Community) is a shining example of that belief in action. NORC events are designed to bring people together and foster a sense of community. At a recent NORC event, Dinner Out at the St. Richard Parish Fish Fry on March 28, friends, family, neighbors, and members of the JFS team came together to share a meal.
But some of the most powerful moments can happen outside of events, often starting with a simple phone call. Jane, a dedicated NORC volunteer, began calling Evelyn as part of her monthly check-in. Over time, their conversations blossomed into a genuine friendship.
Recently, Jane and Evelyn enjoyed time together seeing the film “Shoshanah,” thanks to free movie tickets provided through NORC. The outing was more than just a movie — it was a chance to share laughter and enjoy each other’s company.
Later that same week, Jane visited Evelyn and happened to arrive at the same time Older Adult Services team member Laura was on the phone with Evelyn’s husband, checking in after Evelyn’s recent stroke. It was a beautiful example of the support network at work — neighbors, volunteers, and staff, all coming together to ensure older adults feel connected and cared for.
